—BUT DOES  IT MATTER?

During the 20th century the t____ of the earth rose about one degree Fahrenheit. That p____ doesn’t sound very much to you or me but it is a rapid increase c____ to most natural changes. So how has this come about and does it matter? Earth Care’s Sophie Armstrong e____ these questions. 

There is no d____ that the earth is becoming warmer (see Graph1) but there is fierce debate over whether it is human activity____ has caused this global warming____(a. and b. or) whether it is just a natural phenomenon.

     Many scientists believe that people have c____ the increase in the earth’s temperature t____ the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil to produce e____. Some byproducts of this process are called “greenhouse” gases, the most important one b____ carbon dioxide. Dr Janice Foster explains,   

     “You see, there is a natural p____ that scientists call the ‘greenhouse effect’. This is ____(a. while b.when)small amounts of gases in the atmosphere, like carbon d____, methane and water vapour, trap heat from the sun and t____ warm the earth. Without the ‘greenhouse effect’, the earth would be about thirty-three degree Celsius c____ than it is. So, we need those gases. The problem begins when we add huge q____ of extra carbon dioxide to the a____ by burning fossil fuels. The increased amount of carbon dioxide means that more heat energy is t____ in the atmosphere causing the g____ temperature to go up.” 

     We know that the l____ of carbon dioxide have increased greatly over the last 100 to 150 years. It was a scientist c____ Charles Keeling who made a____ measurements of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1997. He found that, b____ these years, the carbon dioxide c____ of the atmosphere went up from around 315 parts per million to a____ 370 parts per million (see Graph 2). 

     All scientists a____ this data. They also believe it is the burring of more fossil fuels that is r____ in this increase in carbon dioxide. But there are some very different a____ among scientists towards this issue. 

     Dr Janice Foster says that over the next 100 years the a____ of warming could be as ____ as 1to 1.5 degrees Celsius but it could be as much as 5 degree Celsius.

How serious? Some people think future global warming would c____ the sea level to rise d____, famines, the spread of diseases, and the destruction of species.
