An Indian state has banned the sale of soft drinks at government—run schools and colleges, following announcements that drinks from Coca—Cola and PepsiCo sold in the country contained high levels of pesticide(杀虫剂),a news report said Saturday.

      The government of western Gujarat state has asked government—run schools and colleges not to allow sales of soft drinks on their shops or supermarkets, the Press Trust of India said, quoting the state's education minister.“We have decided to stop the sale of Coke, Pepsi and other aerated(碳酸)soft drinks in all 400 government—run colleges,”Gujarat Education Minister Anandiben Patel was quoted as saying.“We have also informed government—run schools in the state about the ban,”she said. The ban will be effective from today, Patel said.

      Offices of Coca—Cola and PepsiCo were shut during the weekend and officials could not be reached for comment.

      Last week, both companies denied the charges, saying the soft drinks that manufacture and sell in India “Obey the strict international rules and all applicable national regulations.”“In more than 200 countries around the world Coca—Cola products comply with local and international beverage standards,”the world's largest soda company Coca—Cola said in a statement.

    “Coca—Cola products sold in India are produced with the same uncompromising commitment to product safety and quality,”it said.

      PepsiCo International spokesman Dick Detwiler said:“The fact of the matter is that our products in India are made in strict accordance with local and international standards, just as they are everywhere else in the world.”

      India's Supreme Court has given the two firms a month to supply it with details of the chemical composition and ingredients of their products, officials said.
